Bearna Golf Club – 25th Anniversary

In 2021 Bearna Golf Club will celebrate its 25th Anniversary. The first Drive-in was held on the 31st March 1996 with men’s Captain Richard Hughes and Lady Captain Liz Neville doing the honours.

The above photograph is of the members waiting to play in the scramble after the drive-in. Note, that even in those days the current wooden cabins had not arrived and that the current clubhouse was a building site.

During the year the Men’s and Ladies Committee’s will be organising various events to celebrate the occasion. It is planned to publish a brief history of the club, arrange special competitions and to commemorate the occasion in many other ways. Any inputs or suggestions from members would be gratefully accepted.  If any members have any memorabilia that they believe might be interesting, please send details to John Collins at

So here’s to an exciting year in 2021.

Handicapping System

Winter Conditions.

Players play off their course handicap.

Penalties are applied as follows: Winner of each weekly competition receives 2 penalty points
The Runner-up and Third place player in each weekly competition receives 1 penalty point

Penalties will apply for 6 months and then be reset to zero before the start of the next 6 monthly period. 1st period will run from October 1st to March 31.

Summer Conditions.

A qualifying Seniors competition will be set up on the computer. As is the case with the weekend club competition each player will play off 95% of their Course Handicap. All scores will be uploaded to the WHS (World Handicapping System) at the end of each competition.

Since a player’s Handicap Index may reduce or increase based on the scores returned, no additional penalties will applied during the summer months.

Golfer of the Year

Standings are based on the top 15 Stableford scores achieved during the calendar year. Any scores outside the top 15 are discarded for the the purposes of calculating the final GOY standings.
